The San Jose Earthquakes have selected Juan Guerrero Jr. as the inaugural recipient of the Amway Global Soccer Scholarship. In an effort to open the Earthquakes Youth Academy to players of different socio-economic backgrounds, Amway Global will cover soccer-related expenses for Guerrero and one other player in 2010.
“Juan has proven he is a quality young talent in the area,” said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle, “It is great that we are able to help him by making sure finances won’t get in his way of becoming the player we think he can be.”
The young midfielder/forward is a former Livermore Premier Program player, where he played under staff at Livermore and former Quakes great Troy Dayak. Guerrero was honored at halftime of the Earthquakes home opener on Saturday, March 27 in front of a record sellout crowd of 10,589 at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Amway Global Soccer Scholarship adds two players to the Earthquakes Youth Academy and allows all players the opportunity to be a part of it. The scholarship will provide the players with more national exposure to colleges and the professional soccer culture.
"Congratulations to Juan on this fantastic achievement," said Jori Hartwig, Vice President of Marketing for Amway Global. "Our business is all about empowering people to achieve their goals and we are so pleased to have the opportunity through the Amway Global Soccer Scholarship to help talented young individuals like Juan reach for their dreams."
